Green Blood & Red Blood For Mars
Troop Definitions and Modifications

  Infantry Units
Assault Infantry (AI):

Infantry troops who are veteran troops OR native elite units who are well equipped.
Their weapons and training make them dangerous to all types of enemy units. In combat
they are effective against infantry, fortifications, cavalry and vehicles.

Garrison Infantry (GI):

These troops are regarded as the basic troops. They include newly arrived regular
trained units from Earth and trained or Martian units with rifles or pole arms.

Jump Infantry (JI):

Rocket powered transported strike units and Scout units with limited combat power.
They are very effective in ambush situations.

Levy Infantry (LI):

These are units of untrained Earth militia and masses of Martians armed with swords
and spears. They may be urban Martians levies, masses of tribal Martians. They are
rated poor in combat effectiveness.

Suicide Infantry (SI):

These are either fanatical or represent huge hordes of warriors who keep pressing
with the enemy without regard to losses. Packs of smaller Martian beasts and their
handlers are also rated as Suicide infantry. Mainly a Martian optional troop type,
check the Suicide Infantry Special Rule.

Close Support Units
Short Range Support Systems (SRS):

These are the weapon systems used mainly in a defensive role. In Earth terms these
are your direct fire artillery or machine-gun units. The class also includes catapults
and bolt-throwers. Systems can be either ground deployed or remain mounted on vehicles
or cart transports but are not deployed tactically as tanks but more as self-propelled
artillery. For contact combat they are considered infantry units.

Long Range Support Systems (LRS):

These are rocket weapons and ultra-modern Earth artillery that can be used for indirect
fire support. Martians have developed their own long range launchers which may be
appear like multiple rocket launchers or trebuchets. The Cephalods use projectors
that emit poisonous gas against earth forces. They also include low-level bombers
aviation assets. Low Level Bombers are often Balloon craft or less common prop driven
aircraft. For contact combat aero-bombers are considered mechanized and ground based
artillery are considered infantry units.

Aviation Close Support Assets: (ACS):

All Aviation assets are considered as Close Support. Communication limitations and
effective enemy anti-aviation assets require that tactical operations for aviation
units be in close proximity to other friendly units. These include air-superiority
and ground support classified aviation assets. Ground Attack Craft are Balloon and
propelled craft. They use MGs and grenades for ground attacks. Air Superiority Fighters
are mainly propelled craft with MGs used to attack other aircraft. They are considered
Mechanized troops except when forced to recoil over rough ground.

Mechanized Units
Are rated as heavy or light based on their use on Mars and cannot be related to
other DBW armies. The term mechanized also refers to cavalry mounted units as well.
The Earth term cavalry is used though the riders may be mounted on horses or a variety
of other animals. Due to the limited availability of vehicle castings for different
nationalities, no vahicle units will be regarded as required. There will always
be optional units listed with them.

Light Strike Force (LSF)
These are light wheeled or tracked armored cars and tankettes used for quick strikes.
Armor cars used during the later World War One, Russian Civil War, and the Spanish
Civil War are the same types that were used on Mars. Earth designed small lightly
armored vehicles using the strut movement system (two-strut or a three-strut tanks)
are rated as LSF since they are less maneuverable than Martian designed Strut craft.
The troop classification is also used for Earth battle cavalry and two-arm Martian
cavalry armed with firearms. LSF Battle cavalry have a greater combat power than
LBCV rated units but less than AAF or HBCV units. These units are effective against
any type of infantry but are vulnerable to heavily armored AAF or HBCVs. A lightly
armored vehicle or three cavalry mounted on a stand are used for this troop type.
They are considered Mechanized troops.

Light Beast cavalry/Combat Vehicles (LBCV):

Troop types in this class include Cephalod or Marian small lightly armored vehicles
using the strut movement system (two-strut or a three strut tanks); tribal 4-arm
Martian scout cavalry with swords; any two-arm Martian cavalry equipped with sword
or lances and mounted on four legged beasts. The LBCV classification also represents
Earth light cavalry formations and large Martian beasts deployed as War-Beasts..
They are considered Mechanized troops but have special recoil options.

Heavy Beast cavalry/ Combat Vehicles (HBCV):

Troop types in this class include Cephalod or Marian moderately armored vehicles
using the strut movement system (large three-strut or four-strut tanks); tribal
4-arm Martian heavy cavalry with rifles or pole-arms; any Martian cavalry with pole-arms
or rifles mounted on six or eight legged beasts. They are considered Mechanized
troops but have special recoil options.

Armored Assault Force (AAF):

These are the heavy wheeled, tracked or steam tanks. Tanks or land battleships van
be represented by early tanks of the World War One, Russian Civil War, Spanish Civil
War and Early Russian multi-turret World War Two varieties. The class also includes
Earth designed moderately armored vehicles using the strut movement system (large
three-strut or a four-strut tanks) are rated as AAF and not HBCV due to their being
less maneuverable than the Martian designed Strut craft. These units are effective
against any type of infantry and AFV units but are vulnerable to aviation and LRS.
A heavy AFV is used for this troop type. They are considered Mechanized troops.

Non-Troop Elements
Bunker Fortification System (BFS):

This represents an integrated system of fortifications and minefields, not just
one complex. For contact combat they are considered infantry units. It cannot move
or recoil.

Command and Control Center (CCC):

This is NOT a Troop Type. This represents the Commander (General) and his staff.
It is a mobile unit. In most cases its firepower may be slightly greater than other
units in its force. Thus the Troop type for the CCC will vary between Army according
to the Army list. If designing your own force, I would recommend that the CCC be
the heaviest troop class allowed.

Logistics Operations Center (LOC):

This is NOT a Troop Type. It is the main base. It is both the Operations Center
and Logistical Depot. It cannot move or recoil. The physical base of the LOC is
80mm wide and 40mm or 60mm deep for 10-15mm.
Introduction

Comparing the Distant World Battles system and the armies which can be found in
Green Blood & Red Blood For Mars produces some interesting armies. The combat
is on a distant world but the situation is for combat in the recent past rather
than the future. Though DBA variant rules can be found on the Fanaticus website
for the 1800s, we decided to modify the army lists for use with the DWB game mechanics.
Some equipment available in the VSF universe has more in common with DWB than the
historical earth combat of the 1800s.

The Army Lists are intended to assist players in designing balanced and realistic
scenarios. The lists should not be considered the only option. Players may want
to design custom armies for use in a specific genre campaign. Various companies
produce their own version of Victorian Sci-Fi Combat on mars. So with additional
research players may find new troop which will have to be classified according to
the rules guidelines.

The European nations are similar but not exact to their Historical Counterparts.
The troop scale of the Mars operations can be considered as regimental or brigade
movement elements. As such, some adjustments have been used for simplicity of organization.
Certain troop types are merged into a single troop type. Other changes are included
to account for VSF technology. European weapons are based on the later decades of
the 1800s.

Native Martian Powers

Interpretations about the Martian culture, vary among different writers. In most
cases Martian Forces can be based on only one of the dominant cultures. Players
should pre-determine if their mars societies are based upon the Ethnic Factions
or an Imperial foundation. The Tribal Martians of the jungle and desert can be found
among both cultures. The Cephalod Overlord influence on Mars can be used or not
allowed.

Mars Society: Ethnic Factions Foundation
Some sources suggest that Martian tribal units may be based on the situation of
factional rivalries based upon ethnic differences. The constant ethnic wars has
stagnated scientific development among the Martian people. Though some thinkers,
regard the motives of the mysterious Cephalods as encouraging the rivalries as a
way to maintain dominance in the Martian society. Local ethnic tribes continue to
fight among each other, despite the incursion of the Earth powers. Different ethnic
tribes, denoted by skin tones, cannot be used together. If the Anti-Earther Sect
contingent is used, the sect members must be of the same skin tone as the dominant
troops. These are the only Martian army lists that can use Earth contingents or
a Cephalod contingent. These are army lists for two-arm Martians. All Martian Ethnic
factions use similar troop types.

AI includes Khan or Chief kinsmen and Warrior Brotherhoods
GI includes Volunteer Infantry,
JI includes scouts
LI includes sword and spear armed warriors
LBCV includes Mounted lancers and sword armed warriors
HBCV includes the mounted Khan Guard and warriors with rifles
SRS includes cannon, catapults or bolt shooters

Kambars or Blue Martians
The Kambars controlled the most towns in the region. As such they are considered
the most urbanized of the ethnic groups.

Wahotek or Red Martians
The Wahoteks were the most nomadic of the Martian ethnic groups. They were adept
raiders whether their particular tribe fought on foot or were mounted. A player
must select all foot troops are all mounted troops in either the 12 Force or 18-Force
army. This does not include the SRS but to be consistent if the mounted option is
used, the cannon or bolt shooter should be placed on a cart. In the 24-Force army,
troop types can include both foot and mounted.

Mars Society: The Imperial Foundation
by Rudy Scott Nelson

In some regions the Imperial structure is sound and in others the Imperial influence
is limited. The lists also imply the existence of a decaying Imperial situation.
The forces here could cover Martians tribes of several skin tones. During some campaign
and playtest sessions players elected to use a mars with the Ethnic Faction societies
in some regions and Imperial foundations with Warlords in other regions.

The Imperial Martians
Soldiers in the Imperial ranks are well motivated. They serve in exchange for land
and a high place in the Martian caste system.

The Green Tribes of the Jungle
The unmapped territory of the dense jungles and swamp are the haven for the Great
four-arm Green Martians. The have dominated this region. For centuries they had
been able to resist the incursions of the Cepaholds and the Imperial Martians. The
Tribal Martians are mounted as GI but are rated as AI due to their fighting ability.
The basic Tribal Martian infantry unit is the Suicide infantry which represents
their being poorly equipped but using the tactic of attacking in massive numbers.
Green Martians due to their paranoia cannot have allies.

AI includes the better equipped bodyguard and veteran warriors
LI/SI includes warrior hordes and packs of small war-beasts.

The Red Tribes of the Deep Desert
The unmapped territory of the barren desert has been the haven for the tribes of
four-arm Red Martians. They have dominated this region. For centuries they had been
able to resist the incursions of the Cepaholds and the Imperial Martians. Most of
the Red Martian prefer to fight mounted on large beasts but a few scouts, slaves
and poor caste warriors will fight on foot. The basic Tribal Martian infantry unit
is the Levy infantry which represents their being poorly equipped. Martian HBCV
Cavalry can fight dismounted as AI but are mounted as GI.

AI includes the better equipped bodyguard and veteran warriors who have dismounted
LI includes poor warriors and slaves
SI includes packs of small war-beasts
JI includes scouts on foot.

The Cephalod Overlords
The oldest race on Mars is the Cephalods. They are non-human biological creatures
with many tentacles. The Cephalods have isolated themselves in mountain strongholds
but still try to have some influence on the Martian Society. Players may elect to
have a Martian culture without the Cephalod influence by regarding them as extinct.

The Cephalods are far advanced scientifically than the other Martians and they have
pursued policies to hinder Martian development in especially weapons technology.
They have ray guns and nimble strut-walkers. They have developed smoke projectors
to hinder the use of ray guns against themselves. These proved ineffective against
the Earther projectile weapons, so they modified them to cast a cloud of toxic gas.
For aero warfare they employ both anti-gravity propulsion and biological Cephalods
who have been enhanced with the ability to fly.

Their combat forces are small but very high tech when compared to their enemies.
They can employ mind control over the primitive beast and can employ them if needed
as war beasts. The anti-Earther sects can only be used against an Earth enemy. All
Cephalod infantry are mounted as LI due to their size.

AI are elite Cephalods armed with ray guns
LI includes non-warrior class Cephalods impressed into service and Martian slaves
SI are masses of small war-beasts
JI are Martian scouts using hi-tech detectors
SRS are heavy ray projectors
LRS includes the poisonous ray Projectors whether mounted on the ground in strut
vehicles or in anti-grav craft
LBCV includes the small nimble strut vehicles and Large War-beasts
HBCV includes the heavier strut vehicles
ACS includes flying Cephalods with ray guns and anti-grav attack craft.

Martian Contingents
by Rudy Scott Nelson

These are various contingents that can be used to supplement a core force in a
24 force OB. They can also be used as part of a Big battle double army. These forces
can be used as part of an Earth, Martian or Cephalod army.

The Anti-Earther Sects
The Anti-Earther Sects can only be used as allies of Warlord Comandaries, Imperial
Troops and Cepahold armies. The six element contingent can be used with a 24 Force
and the 12 Force can be used as an Ally in a big double battle army

AI includes rifle bodyguards
SI includes Fanatic Infantry,
JI includes scouts
SRS includes captured cannon

The Traditional Vassal Contingent
Martian (two-arm ethnic groups) tradition had evolved over centuries that when a
vassal or ally was asked to send a contingent, that a specific Korps organization
was used. This ensured that the letter of the treaty would be followed and that
the overlord would not have to worry about a force arriving that might be capable
of overwhelming the friendly force. The six element contingent can be used with
a 24 Force and the 12 Force can be used as an Ally in a big double battle army

The Cephalod Enforcer Squadron
The Cephalod Enforcer Force is a contingent which can be used with the region dominated
by the factional and ethnic domination. They actually reveal the fact that the Cephalods
were actually the puppet masters for this ethnic group. Cepaholds can be used on
both sides which represents the competing interests of rival groups within the Cephalod
hierarchy.

Pro-Earth Power Martian Contingent
These troops can only be used as part of a larger Earth force. The Martians who
were employed by Earth powers were known by different terms based upon the Earth
nationality. These Martians were professional full time soldiers employed by the
Earth power. The terms do not include any Martian allies, mercenaries or vassal
force. The 6-unit contingent can be used with an Earth 24 Force. The 12-unit contingent
can be used as part of a large 36 Force double battle. Under the British the Martians
were called Sepoys. Under the French the infantry were called Turcos and the cavalry
Spahis. Several powers used the term Askaris. The Italians use Bashi for Martian
Cavalry.

AI includes Elites
GI includes Earth trained Martian Infantry,
JI includes Scouts, Light Infantry and Rifles
LSF includes Allied native Cavalry and Martian heavy Regular Cavalry
LBCV includes Martian Lancers and Allied Scouts

Earth Advisor Command
An Earth Advisor Command Force is a contingent which can be used with the region
dominated by the factional and ethnic domination. More than one Martian ethnic group
can use Earth advisors but they cannot use advisors from the same earth nationality.
If both players want to use the same Earth nationality, roll a d6 and player with
the highest roll gets to select his advisors first. An advisor command will have
only basic troop types. The risk of hi-tech equipment falling into Martian control
limits available troop types.

  AUSTRIA
Austria depends heavily upon Grenzers and Landwehr who are military settlers on
Mars. Uhlans are Lancers. There can be no more than one unit of Naval Landing parties.
The weakest am of the Austrians is there Aviation. An earlier severe setback has
forced the abandonment of several Air Wings with their crews now being deployed
as naval landing party scouts. Austria does not employ many Askari units so can
only use Martian allied contingents.

Ottoman Turkey
The Ottomans encountered strong resistance from the Moslem community in regards
to colonizing Mars. However, eventually the decision was made to convert the Martians
and launch a Jihad against the Cephid Overlords. The delay placed the Turks in an
initially weak position but that is changing as the Jihad is spreading converts
quickly among the rural tribal Martians. The Martian units are not allowed to form
their own contingents and are spread throughout the Ottoman army. As a result, Martian
Sekhan contingents are not allowed. However Martian vassal convert Allies are allowed.
Guard Cavalry can only be used as part of a Generals unit and only one unit can
be used. Redif units are ethnic Turks. Nizam units are volunteers recruited from
other Moslem countries. The Ottomans are weak in both aviation and armored units.
